Clean the Pop Up

The first thing you should do when you have a slow drain in your bathroom is check the sink stopper, also known as the pop up (this is the puny disc in the middle of the drain hole). Hairballs, soap scum, toothpaste and all manner of gunk and muck can all regain nearby the pop up, potentially causing a clog. Fortunately, the pop up is commonly pretty easy to take out and clean - just lift it up and search for it. If it's dirty or clinging onto something that's clogging the pipes, take off the obstruction and throw it away. Hopefully pulling out a clog from the pop up will be enough to get your drain flowing freely again.

Clean the P-trap

If you tried cleaning the pop up but your drain is still engaging slow, you're going to have to break out the big guns. Underneath your sink basin you'll observation a pipe that drops down, then curves back up about two inches before going into the wall. The purpose of this puny dip is to hold water that blocks fumes and gases from the sewer and prevents them from coming out straight through the sink - absolutely a good thing!

Unfortunately, the P-trap is as good at trapping water as it is at trapping things like hair, soap scum and other drain cloggers (to say nothing of diamond rings, teeth and whatever else that accidentally falls down the sink!).

Clearing a clog out of the P-trap is a dirty job - but if you like muck, you're in luck! Get a pail or towel and put it under your sink as best you can to catch any water that falls down - there could be a lot. Next, take a set of pliers and pop off the seals nearby the ends of the P-trap. The trap should slide off easily, along with a rush of water. Pull the P-trap all the way off, clear it out and use a bent up wire hanger to clear out as much of the pipe leading into the house as possible. If you pull out something nasty, that should do the trick!

If you've tried these tricks and your drain is still slow, call a plumbing company. They will have expert drain cleaning experts who can snake a line into your pipes and knock out the clog wherever it is.
